The 2016 Alice Springs Masters Games has gained another sport.

Members of Australia’s Go Kart community will descend on the Red Centre next year to join the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Games.

Competitors will enjoy racing at the Alice Springs Karting Club facility which will undergo upgrades to power, the canteen and the grandstand after the Government announced a $300,000 capital works boost in the Budget.

Motor racing tragic Chief Minister Adam Giles is thrilled at the news.

“This is a fantastic addition to the Masters Games and I’m looking forward to seeing some great racing during the competition,” Mr Giles said.

“The Alice Springs Masters Games is an iconic sporting and community event for the Northern Territory and continues to attract a huge following from competitors and supporters through to corporates. Next year’s 30th anniversary is shaping up to be a cracker.”

Sport and Recreation Minister Gary Higgins said an additional sport further proves the attraction of the Games nationally.

“Go Karting is a family oriented sport which appeals to people of all ages, and I know there are a few over 30s who enjoy competing in this sport regularly who are looking forward to the opportunity to test their driving skills and battle it out for medals,” Minister Higgins said.

“Go Karting is a sport which requires quick decision making and precision, and will be a welcome addition to the Games program.”

It’s expected the additional sport will attract about 100 new competitors to the Games. Many of these new competitors will come from interstate and will bring their support crews and families, increasing the tourism benefit of extra visitation numbers during the Games.

“The other positive element about Go Karting is that most visitors travel with their karts, and will elect to camp or stay in other appropriate accommodation where they can park their karts,” Mr Higgins said.

“So we gain extra visitors to Central Australia to enjoy our amazing Red Centre and we still have plenty of hotel stock and other accommodation to encourage maximum occupancy during the Games period in October next year.”

The 2016 Alice Springs Masters Games will run from 8 to 15 October.
